A brief History...

It all started innocently enough, back in the days when Jerry Grant was a graduate student. He loved beer and figured he could save some money brewing his own.

"I thought it would be fun. I could make good beer cheaper than I could buy it," said Grant, managing member and head brewer at the soon-to-open Mt. Emily Ale House in downtown La Grande.

The building at 1202 Adams Avenue was built in 1900 and originally housed the U.S. National Bank. The original vault is even still intact in the basement! Since then, the building has housed two jewelry stores, a clothing store, and a lending corporation. The building was remodeled in 2008 and converted into a brewpub. The opening of Mt. Emily Ale House in February 2009 was the culmination of years of dreaming and months of planning and work by co-owners Jerry Grant and Bob Kidney. Jerry has been home brewing since 1992 and graduated from the UC Davis Master Brewers Program in 2007. Bob has been a student of the culinary arts for several decades. Together they teamed up to follow their passions of creating original English-style ales and gourmet pizza for residents and visitors of La Grande.
